Perfect Cake Bases for Discerning Decorators

Cakebases.co.uk is a branch of Parkinson’s of Leyland, a family bakery and catering business founded in Leyland, Lancashire in 1936 by Susanna Parkinson. Susanna Parkinson was the Great Grandmother of the present owners Sally and Lee.

Great Grandmother Parkinson (1884 - 1971) found herself a widow in her mid forties with five daughters to support. Living in East Lancashire at the time, she made ends meet by selling pie and peas from her front room. This quickly became more established and in the late 1930's she saw an opportunity to purchase a property 30 miles away in Leyland, just south of Preston, opposite the expanding Leyland Motors bus factory.

The move was an immediate success and soon she needed help with running the business, so her second daughter Sally and her husband Harold Grimshaw, moved over to Leyland to give her the support she needed.

Harold and Sally Grimshaw took over the business as Susanna retired and after the end of the war were joined by their eldest son Brian and later (after Harold's death in 1960) by brother Derek. Sally and Lee took over the business in 2009.
